When to show the door to a student...

It happens quite rarely.. once in a bluemoon... should i say... but when it happens it becomes epical in scale and historical in perspective. Today was one such day for three of my students who had to face the music, for breach of decorum. The euphemistic language i use here is evidence to the much cruder stuff behind this phrase. Having laid down the preamble for my classes, and insisting on students following it atleast in spirit, i was quite immune to some of the antics played by some of the students. But most of the time, i could find three guys who were nonchalantly disturbing the very ethos of the class right from the word "Go". This gave me anxious moments and the class too was seemingly perturbed. Good ones at the back benches were deprived of their cup of tea, and the ardent ones were also seen looking at those special ones and their teacher, alternately. This gave me the clue and slowly but steadily i opened up on the issue and said that three golden guys would face the music today for "exceptionally good" behavior. And the guys hung their heads. Later, when they came to the dept for pardon, i rejected it rightaway. Cos, this was the umpteenth time i had gone slow on them. This leads me to another question... which is, does punishment really merit these guys? Or is it simply yet another case of lackadaisicality on the part of these "golden" students.?

The only way to keep discipline is to discipline those who do not follow it. Like the bad apple makes the rest in the basket go bad as well, the same will happen in class if appropriate measures are not taken.
